Multicast Troubleshooting No Casting From Phone to TV
After struggling for a couple of days with Multicast not working from Android or Apple devices to the TVs in my home. First I restarted my router software(PFSense) then my Unifi self-hosted network then my whole Proxmox server running both. I used the packet capture feature of PFSense to see that my Android device was sending out a request who has to the IPs that were most likely responding to its multicast query. I could not find anything useful going down this path. I started doing research, what ports does it usually use or why would it suddenly stop working? What puzzled me the most was a lot of the stuff popping up was about different VLANs which I didn’t have for my wifi-connected devices. After circling back to the request who has and why I am not seeing any responses to that I stumbled upon this article.

After I had installed my AP and adopted it to the Unifi network host, the optimization checkboxes were already checked so I decided to leave it that way which seemingly caused this based on the article. After I read that I restarted the physical Unifi AP which should have been one of my processes in the first place(won’t make that mistake again). Multicasting showed up fine, so I went through and disabled all the nightly channel optimization features fixing this issue for the foreseeable future.
